Growing Greener!
Trees at Gateway

In celebration of Earth Day, the Town of Firestone has taken a big step forward in expanding its tree canopy and promoting sustainability. From April 21–24, the Forestry and Parks Divisions joined forces for one of the largest tree planting projects in recent memory, adding a total of 42 new trees across several community parks:

  • Hart Park: 15 trees
  • Onorato Park: 3 trees
  • Miners Park: 6 trees
  • Gateway Park: 13 trees
  • Firestone Regional Sports Complex: 5 trees

These trees offer more than beauty—they’ll provide cleaner air, more oxygen, cooling shade, better erosion control, and reduced water pollution. Trees also enhance mental well-being and transform our parks into more welcoming, healthier spaces.

Planting for Resilience

What makes this initiative especially impactful is its incredible diversity. Of the 42 trees planted, 20 different species were used, with no more than three of the same species. This approach follows the “10-20-30” rule of urban forestry, which recommends planting no more than 10% of a single species, 20% of a single genus, and 30% of a single plant family. This approach strengthens our urban forest’s resilience against pests and diseases, such as the emerald ash borer, which has devastated communities with high concentrations of Ash trees.

Sustainability was a top priority during tree selection. Once established, most trees are drought-tolerant, supporting the Town’s ongoing efforts to conserve water.

Xeriscaping for a Greener Tomorrow

In addition to planting trees, the Parks, Irrigation, and Forestry teams completed a major xeriscape project at the Firestone Regional Sports Complex. Located east of Field 3 (between the playground and the field fence), this area—once bare soil and weeds—has been transformed into a vibrant landscape of native grasses, perennials, xeric shrubs, and trees.

Together, these green initiatives will benefit our community for years to come—supporting wildlife, pollinators, water conservation, and making Firestone’s public spaces more beautiful and sustainable.
