Upcoming Improvements at I-25 & Firestone Boulevard
For many years, residents and visitors have experienced congestion at the intersections directly east of I-25 on Firestone Boulevard. This area also consistently sees one of the highest numbers of traffic accidents in Town. While this section of roadway is within Firestone’s jurisdiction, it is owned and maintained by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
CDOT has made several improvements in this area, but the Town of Firestone has taken the lead to further improve traffic conditions. The Town has partnered with CDOT to implement additional measures to boost safety, ease congestion, and improve traffic flow.
As part of the Town’s adopted 2026 budget, a widening project on Firestone Boulevard has been approved to address these concerns.
When the project is complete, the westbound left-hand turn lane on Firestone Boulevard to southbound I-25 will extend past the intersection to ease turning movements in this direction, and an additional lane will be added on the north side of Firestone Boulevard to facilitate movements onto the northbound I-25 on-ramp. These improvements will not only facilitate turning movements but also increase the efficiency of through traffic on Highway 119. View a map of improvements here.
What to Expect
- Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, February 16, and continue through the summer of 2026, weather permitting.
- Most work is anticipated to occur at night, between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., to minimize daytime traffic impacts.
- Traffic control signs and detour routes, if needed, will be clearly marked throughout the construction zone. Motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists are encouraged to pay close attention to all posted signage.
- During a portion of the project, the slip ramp onto northbound I-25 will be temporarily closed. Passenger vehicles will still be able to access I-25 from the signalized intersection. However, due to the tighter turning radius, larger vehicles, including trucks, will be detoured onto the frontage road during this time.
